Dating and Courtship
I adhered to the word of God and to my church’s view on dating — that it is always a pathway to marriage. My church also taught that the man.
George Church, a Harvard geneticist renowned for his work on reversing aging, is creating an app that could eliminate human disease for good by matching potential partners based on their DNA compatibility. The app will pair people who have the least amount of risk of creating offspring with illnesses or disabilities. During a recent 60 Minutes broadcast , correspondent Scott Pelley peppered Church with questions about his lab at Harvard, where he and about researchers are attempting to grow whole organs from Church’s own cells.
The goal, as the geneticist sees it, is to grow organs that will no longer pose a threat of rejection. This process of gene editing—or changing cells from their original state back into the unspecified stem cells you may see in a fetal tissue that have not yet become a specific organ—is relatively safe territory compared to some of Church’s other ideas, like encouraging selective breeding through a dating app. Church’s proposed app will pair potential star-crossed lovers based on their genome sequence, rather than, say, their love of Stephen King novels or affinity for chess.
The idea is that if two people will likely produce offspring with genetic mutations, they’re not a good match. This app borrows some ideas you may have encountered in high school biology, including how dominant genes will be expressed before recessive genes are. That’s why mutations, or errors in your DNA’s source code, are usually uncommon.
While many diseases like sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis are genetic, some aspects of our physical appearance, like having red hair, are also the result of mutations. Indeed, the idea of eliminating all diseases might sound like the work of a sci-fi flick, but upon further inspection, it’s a bit too close for comfort to Adolf Hitler’s own attempts to create a supposedly superior Aryan race. Church’s dating app promotes the idea of selective breeding. Eugenics, which literally translates to “good birth” in Latin, is the science of promoting desirable qualities in the human race, usually through some kind of controlled breeding.
This can take many forms, from choosing to adopt children due to a family history of psychosis, or authoritarian governments setting up forced sterilization procedures for anyone deemed undesirable by society.
Why Christian Dating is Brutal
This was one of the first statements I heard from the group of four Christian men I interviewed — and we’ll just call them Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They all attend Bel-Air Presbyterian Church, and range in age from 28 to 40 years old. In addition, they are all currently single, and their words formed a striking correlation with what I heard from the single, Christian men in New York City: They’re all interested in finding someone to spend their lives with, but not particularly keen on finding her at church.
What is marriage? How are we meant to define it? The world around us offers many answers to these questions, making the truth about it less and less clear. The institution of marriage itself seems broken within our culture, leading some to reject it outright. Now, more than ever, we must recover a Biblical perspective of marriage as oneness, and more importantly, a practice of this oneness to match. Are you in a dating relationship or one day hope to be?
Dating Better helps us think about how to date in a healthy, God-honoring way. This series covers topics such as the purpose of singleness, the need for community in dating, red flags to look for, how gender plays a role, and pursuing purity while growing in intimacy.
The Secret to Dating at Church
The excavation will take place near the intersection of Nassau and Francis streets with hopes to unearth the early structure used by members of the Historic First Baptist Church dating back as late as the 19th century. The excavation will start in early September and the first phase is expected to last seven weeks. The first phase has been fully funded through donor support. First Baptist Church was organized in , the year America gained its independence, by enslaved and free Blacks in secret.
Prior to the s, members of the church met in secret at Green Spring Plantation and then Raccoon Chase, a rural area outside of Williamsburg. Dating back to , a structure on the property was referred to as the Baptist Meeting House and could have existed as early as the late 18th century.
NewSpring is a life-giving church, marked by the presence of God, activating us to impact others.
On 60 Minutes last Sunday, geneticist George Church made a passing comment about a genetic dating app his lab was developing that he said could wipe out inherited disease. A dating app that matches users based on DNA? George Church argues this could solve parents passing on inherited diseases. The feedback in the media—mainstream and social—was immediate and mostly negative. Deaf people took offense. Trans people took offense. Some scientists took offense.
There’s virtually no chance this will work 2. It’s basically eugenics 3. The idea is to use DNA comparisons to make sure people who share a genetic mutation, like those that cause Tay-Sachs disease or cystic fibrosis, never meet, fall in love, and have kids. With such recessive conditions, of which there are thousands, kids develop the disease if they inherit two risk genes, one from each parent.
That connection only added to the furious reaction to his 60 Minutes appearance. So is Digid8 eugenics? Yes and no.

In cultures where dating or courtship is acceptable, dating can help youth develop friendships and eventually find an eternal companion. Youth in the Church are taught to wait until at least age 16 to begin dating and to date only those who have high moral standards. Dating before then can lead to immorality, limit the number of other young people you meet, and deprive you of experiences that will help you choose an eternal partner. Many young people do not date during their teen years because they are not yet interested, do not have opportunities, or simply want to delay forming serious relationships.
However, good friendships can and should be developed at every age. Avoid going on frequent dates with the same person.
Love, Dates & Heartbreaks
The title of that book induces panic in people, but in its pages is great truth for young men and women in dating relationships. I recommend it for all young people, high-school and college. This message was that casual dating is not good, women’s hearts must be guarded by men, and all romantic relationships better have marriage.
Your ultimate goal is to spend eternity with Heavenly Father, and in His kingdom we will live as eternal families. So the ultimate goal of dating is to find an eternal companion you can make and keep temple covenants with. These skills will be helpful in your social interactions and then later in courtship and marriage. It is good for young men and young women to learn to know and to appreciate one another.
It is good for you to go to games and dances and picnics, to do all of the young things. We encourage our young people to date. We encourage you to set high standards of dating.
What Happened When I Got All of My Dating Advice From My Evangelical Church
Harvard biologist George Church, one of the pioneers of the Human Genome Project and gene editing, received quite a bit of bad press after he admitted to receiving funds from Jeffrey Epstein. The idea is to pair people based on the propensity of their genes, so there would be fewer children suffering from hereditary diseases. Does that sound sexy? Well, that sounds more like a right swipe on eugenics to me.
Historically, eugenicists advocated selective breeding to improve the genetic composition of the human race.
Those who are single or dating are especially encouraged to join us for the afternoon, but this event is open to the whole church.
Well done, and great question! Sweet Erica is sitting next to you in church. She is brilliant, wise, articulate and principled. You noticed the moment she started her internship at your workplace that she was just wonderful, nice to chat with, attractive, marriage material, the bearer of your progeny, and definitely the one God has sent from on high to satisfy your deepest longing and ….
We have some serious issues to work out, namely, the lack of courage displayed by really good men who are hiding their heads in the sand, even as their heart longs to connect. But why? Message: Casual dating is not good. The fear is that casual dating means casual sex, casual deep intimacy or casual love—which are all by nature not casual.
But if we assume that a good man and a good woman understand those boundaries, why would getting coffee and learning more about the other person not be healthy, enjoyable and within any reasonable scope of OK?
The Dating Machine: Part I
That’s Church’s goal. Update: In December , Church announced a dating app called Digid8 meant to do just that. Speaking to the MIT.

Is your church sabotaging your dating life?
Want to share yours? I was the tallest girl in my grade at my suburban Orange County church, and taller than almost all of the boys. Nathan was a lanky surfer type, with long knobby fingers that moved gracefully on a guitar, an effortless smile, and straight blond hair. The hair was a point of pride for him. It was also the thing that hooked me, along with his height.
On 60 Minutes last Sunday, geneticist George Church made a passing comment about a genetic dating app his lab was developing that he.
Interested in contributing to a future installment of Dating While? Fill out this form. She is an associate editor at Christianity Today. Growing up as a conservative Southern Baptist, I was conditioned to believe that the purpose of dating is for marriage. You only date when you are ready and able to be married, and you only date people whom you would consider marrying. Anything that detracts from your marriage potential, like a quirky personality, thick thighs or a too-loud laugh, decreases your value as a person.
It makes sense that the church is where I would find someone who shares my values and is like-minded on many issues. How have those conversations gone? Many have forced me to think more deeply about my own beliefs, and a few have left me thankful to have something greater than myself to believe in. Some discussions leave me just as curious and confused as my date as we wonder aloud about the repercussions of crimes committed within isolated tribes in other parts of the world.
Dating people of various faith backgrounds has been enlightening for me — though that reality deviates from what I was taught growing up.
